8 | Burrows Dead The grin reaper, death, has again visited our community, and verily he has no respect of persons. This time he has chosen from among us a young man just entering the prime of life. This morning, January 27, 1899, Johnny Burrows died of pneumonia at the home of his mother on the corner of Grand and Railroad avenues. Johnnie was twenty-three years of age last Wednesday. He has lived here since a child, attending the public school where, on account of his kindness and willingness to be of service to his schoolmates, he was a general favorite. He will be missed by his many friends, as he was always full of life and ready to enter with zeal into any sport which might be on foot. He had a very amiable disposition and was not often provoked. As his schoolmates used to remark, Johnny was never heard to say a word of harm against anyone. He leaves in our midst a widowed mother, a sister, and four brothers to mourn his loss. The funeral will probably be held tomorrow afternoon, and the interment will be at Rio Vista, where his father is buried, but as yet arrangements are not completed. | Burrows, John "Johnny" (I5942)

10 | Drowned at Nodaway Frank Steele, a laborer employed by J. J. Greer who is building the bridge over the Nodaway river near Nodaway station, was drowned Monday afternoon about 3 o'clock while in swimming. Another laborer, Harry St. Clair was with him. Steele could not swin and when as is supposed, he was seized with cramps, he was unable to help himself. The body was recovered almost immediately, but before restorative means could be secured, life was extinct. 14 | Unidentified Body at Christianson's Monday evening Coroner Jefferies was called to Nodaway by the drowning of a young man about twenty-seven years old, who gave his name as Frank Steele [sic]. He was seen to drown by workmen and Dr. Jefferies, of course, held no inquest. He came to the men working on the railroad at Nodaway, Saturday and on account of not being very well he was given the work of waiting tables. At three o'clock Monday afternoon, he went to the Nodaway river swimming. He swam about fifteen feet and it was supposed that he went to the pier under the bridge to rest but the sides of the piers are smooth and he threw up his hands at the sides of the pier and sank. Workmen dived and in less than half an hour they brought up his body but could not restore life. Carl Christianson brought the body to his undertaking establishment here and Coroner Jefferies has written to every obtainable address from the workmen but as yet no one has been found. He had told of a sister in Iowa but she has not been located. Tatooed [sic] on his arm is Co., F, 27th U. S. Infantry and that clue too is being investigated. | Steel, Frank (I16662)
