Black Marriage Registry 1865-1874

In Missouri African-Americans were not allowed to legally marry until after the Emancipation Proclamation. After the Civil War, a state law was passed on February 20, 1865, requiring African-Americans to register their marriages. This is a transcription of the ledger which was kept to register "*colored" marriages from 1865-1874. Many of these entries include the name, and sometimes the ages, of the children already born to these unions. About half of the entries do not list the last name of the woman. As the handwriting was very fancy and spidery, but legible in most places, I double checked each entry against the 1870 Pettis County census, to record the names as accurately as possible.

The spelling and grammar is as recorded. Any name that was difficult to decipher, because of faded writing or a torn page is followed by (?). Any comments by me are also in parentheses at the end of the entry. There are thirty two (32) pages in the registry. Copies of any pages in the ledger can be ordered by writing the Pettis County Recorder of Deeds, Pettis County Courthouse, 415 S. Ohio, Sedalia MO 65301. Please enclose $1.00 per requested page and a SASE.

[* Since "colored" is redundant, it has been removed from the name of each principle below. CW]
