W. H. Burkley Expires in City
William H. Burkley, 91, well known retired Seymour insurance agent, died Wednesday night at Schneck Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for the past six days but prior to that time had enjoyed good health in spite of his advanced age.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Voss Mortuary with Dr. Clyde S. Black, pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church, in charge. Burial in Riverview Cemetery. Friends are asked to please omit flowers.
Friends may call at the Voss Mortuary after 7 o'clock tonight.
Mr. Burkley was born October 12, 1856, on a farm near what is now the town of Henryville, Clark county. He was the only son of Frederick and Paulena Schneck Burkley. In his early infancy, his parents moved to Jeffersonville. At the age of 18, he came to Seymour in 1874 and had spent the remainder of his life here.
In May, 1879, he was married to Sophia Alwes in this city. She died March 14, 1934, after their married life had extended over a period of 55 years. They were the parents of two sons, Dr. Howard W. Burkley, who preceded his father in death, and Willard Burkley.
Mr. Burkley was engaged in the insurance and real estate business in Seymour for 49 years, retiring in 1942. He was an active member of the Trinity Methodist Church and was a man of kindly disposition, enjoying the esteem of a host of friends who mourn his passing.
Three sisters, Mrs. Louise Lunte, Mrs. Carrie Humes and Miss Mary Burkley, preceded him in death. He is survived by one son, Willard Burkley, of Cleveland, Ohio; his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charlotte Burkley; a granddaughter, Mrs. Marilyn Sites, of Terre Haute, and five grandsons, Howard, Jr., Loyd, Paul, Donald and Robert Burkley. Three great grandchildren also survive.
