      SAVANNAH, Mo. - Eugene Leonard Townsend, 78, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1987, at his Savannah home.

      He was born near Barnard, Mo., and had farmed in the Andrew County area. He was employed for seven years with the City of Savannah Street Department, retiring in 1974.

      Mr. Townsend was a member of the Rosendale Christian Church and he was an Army veteran of World War II.

      He married the former Rosetta M. Betts on Feb. 25, 1946, at Troy, Kan. She survives of the home.

      Additional survivors are a daughter, Catherine Townsend, St. Joseph; a son, John L., Platte City, Mo.; a sister, Emerald Cox, Lamar, Mo.; two brothers, Edwin, Liberty, Mo., and Alfred, Rosendale: two stepgrandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

      Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Breit & Hawkins Funeral Home of Savannah. Burial will follow in the Savannah Cemetery. Family visitation will begin after 7 this evening at the funeral home chapel.
