| 245 | At Walnut Shade: Charge Filed In Gun Death FORSYTH. Nov. 26 (Special) - A charge of first degree murder was filed today against Cecil May, 25, of Walnut Shade, in connection with the fatal shooting of a Kansas relative early this morning. Authorities said May was not immediately arraigned at his own request and that of his defense attorney. He is accused of slaying his half brother, Lorenzo Andrew "Bud" Pulley. 35, Wichita, Kan., during an argument about 4:30 a.m. May told authorities Pulley, visiting at his home, shoved him out of bed and pushed him around. Coroner Walter Cobb said the two men apparently had been drinking earlier, and that May shot Pulley in the chest with a .22 caliber rifle. Cobb said that following the shooting May and a girl friend of Pulley took the wounded man to the home of a doctor, but he was dead on arrival. Sheriff Theron Gideon arrested May at the physician's home after being summoned. Authorities said Pulley had taken Nellie Atkins, 26, to her former home town at Summit, Ark., for a visit earlier. | 246 | Atkins, Larry L. 1939-2024 Rea, Mo. 23 January 2024 REA, Mo. - Larry L. Atkins, 84, Rea, Missouri, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born on July 5, 1939, in Fillmore, Missouri, to the late Willie and Annie (Ueligger) Atkins. Larry was a 1957 graduate of Rosendale High School, Mr. Atkins was a proud American and served his country in the Missouri Air National Guard from 1957-1959. Larry devoted his life to civic duty. He was the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer for the Missouri State Highway Patrol for over 34 years and served as the Andrew County Presiding Commissioner for 16 years. Larry volunteered for the Rosendale Fire Department as well as for the Boy Scouts of America. He was active as central committee member of the Andrew Country Republican Party for several years and was a member of the Rosendale Christian Church. Larry loved farming and tractor cruises. Larry never knew a stranger and looked forward to his frequent coffee shop visits and hosting family get togethers. Larry married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Clements, on April 25, 1958. They celebrated 53 years of marriage until her passing in 2011. In addition to his wife and parents, Larry was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Atkins; and two brothers, Lloyd and Dean Atkins. Larry is survived by his four sons, Bryan (Glenna) and Darryl, of Rea, Monty (Wendy), of Bolckow, Missouri, and Kent, of Rea; grandchildren, Dustin (Kourtnea), Ariel (Payden), Colby (Kaitlin), Heather Gary), Zachary, Bryan Tyler Atkins; great-grandchildren, Faith, Laine, Harper, Emmy, Addie, Wrenley and Wells; brother, Dale Atkins; sister-in-law, Yolanda Clements; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. | 247 | CALLED HOME Mrs. May Craig, wife of Rodney Craig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Rivett died at the home of her parents last Saturday at 6 p.m. o'clock after a lingering illness of consumption for seven or eight months. Deceased was wedded to her husband about eight months ago and has been in failing health since. She was an active member of the New Hope Baptist church and was blest with friends by the score. Those who knew her best speak of her as indeed a lovely young lady. She was but 24 years of age and for this reason the death seems all the more sad. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Petree last Monday evening. Remains were laid to rest in the New Hope cemetery, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. | 248 | Carol Lee Kester Carol Lee Kester daughter of the late Edward Leroy Barnes and Joyce Marie (Huffstutler) Barnes was born on February 10, 1949 in Paris, Mississippi and departed this life on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She had attained the age of seventy-four years, seven months and twenty-five days. Carol had resided in Ellsinore, Missouri since 1964 and was formerly of Qulin, Missouri. She was of the Pentecostal faith. She enjoyed going to church, listening to gospel music, and singing, and loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol was kind, giving, thoughtful, and caring. On February 13, 1964, she was united in marriage to Tony William Kester. He preceded her in death on September 3, 1994. Survivors include her daughter, Carla Marie Weible (Wayne) of Fremont, MO; brothers, Charley Barnes (Bonnie) and Eddie Niva; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends who mourn her passing. | 249 | Carson, Roger L. 1934-2024 Savannah, Mo. 19 November 2024 SAVANNAH, Mo. - Roger Lee Carson, 90, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Aug. 29, 1934, to Melvin and Mary (Kurtz) Carson with twin brother, Roland, outside of Oregon, Missouri. Roger attended and graduated from New Point School in 1952. He attended Northwest Missouri State College, in Maryville, Missouri, in 1953. He then joined the Army in 1954 and was stationed in South Korea, where he served in the 44th Engineering Battalion. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1956. After discharge, he pursued his education and graduated from Colorado State College in Greeley in 1959. After graduation, Roger moved to Savannah, Missouri, and engaged in farming for 65 years. While refusing to slow down and retire from farming, he drove for Missouri Western, in St. Joseph, and King of the Road, from Topeka, Kansas, tour busses for many years. He traveled over the U.S. and Canada including going to the Olympics in Salt Lake City in Utah and Washington D.C. Roger was a member at St. Paul United Methodist Church, in Country Club, Missouri. Mr. Carson was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Roland; sister, Marilyn Mitchell; and daughter, Lu Ann (Steve) Ferguson. Roger married Barbara Rutherford in 1980. She survives of the home. He is also survived by sons, Jon (Lynette) Carson, Cody (Allison Lee) Carson; daughters, Debbie (Tom) Brooke, Shelley (Alfredo) Morales Merritt and Brea Merritt; grandchildren include, Abbie (Shawn) Cun, BJ (Emmie) Ferguson, Kurt (Jennifer) Brooke, Chris Brooke, Hunter and Halle Carson; granddaughter, Alyka Zahnd and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Carson has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel, where a register book is available to sign during regular office hours.
