Martin L. Paulsgrove [sic], aged 54 years, died Wednesday at 10:45 a.m., at the residence of Frank S. Philo, 2412 Duncan St. Funeral from there at 9 a.m. Friday. Funeral services at Long Branch church at 12 m. Interment at Long Branch cemetery.

Subject: Susan Catherine (Clore) Edds Roberts

Mrs. Susie C. Roberts, seventy-six years old, widow of William C. Roberts, died at 2:30 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, W. E. Edds, 1923 Union street. Besides the son at whose home she died, another son, T. J. Edds, Chillicothe, Mo., also survives.

James D. Carl, one of the early settlers of St. Joseph, died yesterday morning. Mr. Carl was born at Frankfort, Kentucky, Nov. 5, 1826.  He came to St. Joseph in 1849, and soon after his arrival opened the first bakery and confectionery establishment in the frontier village. 

He remained in this business for a number of years, and afterwards conducted a fish and oyster house in a store room on Market square.  He continued to follow this business until 1876, when failing health made his retirement necessary. 

During his active career Mr. Carl was recognized as one of St. Joseph's enterprising citizens, and older residents recall him as among those who did much for the early development and progress of the city. 

The deceased leaved a widow, one daughter, Mrs. Henry Petrie and a son, Oscar, who is now in business here. 

The funeral will take place Sunday morning from the late home of the deceased, 924 North Second street.  Interment will take place at Long Branch cemetery, near Avenue City.

James D. Carl, aged seventy-eight years, died at 4:45 Friday morning.  Will be buried Sunday morning at 9 o'clock.  Long Branch Cemetery.  Funeral will be at family residence, 923 No. 2d.

Subject: Malven Devault

Martin [sic] Devault, who resided near Avenue City in Andrew county, and who was awaiting trial in that county on the charge of having killed his wife last year, killed himself at the residence of his sister, Mrs. O. E. Gillip, 109 East Rosine street, Tuesday, by turning on the gas in his room. He left a note in which he denied any knowledge of the killing of his wife and asked his father to see that his name was cleared of the charge. Devault was thirty years old and a farmer.  He leaves one child-- a daughter.

Former Resident Dies 

John R. Etchison died in St. Joseph December 8, 1920, at his home, 2010 Boyd street. He was born May 4, 1849, on the Etchison farm near the Long Branch church, where he lived until 1885, when he moved to St. Joseph. 

He leaves with Mrs. Etchison a son and three daughters, J. A. Etchison of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Ada Kelley of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Sam Coffman of near Savannah, and five brothers, T. B. Etchison, W. D. and O. D., Isaac and I. D. of St. Joseph, and a sister, Mrs. Fannie Dorrell, of Savannah; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Interment was in the Long Branch cemetery.

Robert Fimple in Monroe township, went to the neighbors to clean some beans and hemp seed. Returning home his 9-year old boy was sitting in a tub on the sack. The wagon ran against a stump, threw the boy out of the wagon and two wheels ran over him. He lived a few minutes. His mother had died six years before. It was one of the saddest accidents.

There was quite a sad accident happened, Thursday evening, which caused the death of one of Robert Fimple's younger boys.  The particulars are as follows: Mr. Fimple had been to Mr. Leidy's to clean some beans and hemp seed, and was returning home.  The boy was sitting on a tub on top of the sack, and when near Elizabeth Miller's, one of the wheels struck a stump, and the boy was pitched out of the wagon, and two of the wheels ran over him.  Mr. Fimple stopped the wagon as soon as possible, and picked the boy up.  He only spoke a few words, and died in a few minutes.  He was carried into Mrs. Miller's house, where he remained till the next day, and then he was taken to Long Branch Cemetery and buried.  He was the youngest child.  His mother died some six years ago.  He was a favorite and pet of the family.

Subject: Sarah A. (Jones) Morgan

Sarah A. Morgan, wife of J. W. Morgan, died at her home three miles east of Savannah, Jan. 27, 1910, after an illness of six weeks duration. She was born in Kentucky, March 6 1836, and was married to J. W. Morgan March 16, 1852, and with him came to Missouri in 1881. Eight children were born to them, six of whom together with the aged husband survive her and are as follows: J. P., C. F., W. M., and G. E., Mrs. Lissie Swink and Mrs. John Glasgow, all of Andrew county. Had she lived until March 16 she would have been married 58 years. Converted when quite young, she became a member of the Methodist church of which she was a member at the time her death. Her life was one of faithfulness to her convictions, true in her relations as wife and mother and constant as a friend and neighbor, hence leaving a record of a life worthy spent. Funeral services were held Jan. 29, 1910, at Long Branch church, conducted by Rev. W. L. Scarborough and the body laid to rest in the cemetery near by.

William A. Maughmer died at his home in Talihina, Oklahoma, October 3, after a short illness, and the body was brought to Andrew county and placed in the Long Branch cemetery, October 7, after funeral services by Louis Nuckols. 

Mr. Maughmer was born in Andrew county, July 20, 1856, and moved three years to Oklahoma.  He was married near Rochester, January 11, 1880, to Miss Betty Shores, whom he leaves with one son and two grandchildren.  He leaves relatives in the county to mourn his untimely departure.

Subject: Zachariah Taylor McDorman

Zachariah Taylor McDorman was born in Clay county, Missouri, Sept. 14, 1849, and died at Eldorado, Kas., Dec. 26, 1920.  Nearly all his life was lived in the community of the Long Branch Church. 

He was married to Amanda Craig.  To this union five children were born, three of whom survive him.  His second marriage was to Leora Jane Stout.  To this union six children were born, three of whom survive him. 

Memorial services were conducted by A. R. Hunt at the Long Branch Christian church and burial was in the cemetery by the church.

On Wednesday, the 12th, Mr. Allen D. Miller departed this life after a very short illness. He leaves a large family and many friends to mourn his loss.

Another one of Andrew county's landmarks is gone. 

Frederick T. Miller died at his home at Dean at 1:20 a.m., Saturday, May 7, 1898, of general debility due to old age.  Bro. Miller had lived in Andrew county for forty-nine years.  He was born in Callaway county, this state, in 1831, came to Andrew county in 1849, and save a few years spent in California in an early day, has lived continuously in this county every since 1862 on the farm on which he died. 

Bro. Miller was a consistent member of the Christian church for forty-seven years, having joined the church when twenty years old.  He gave liberally of his time and means in building up the church and the advancement of the cause of Christ.  Though not of the strongest constitution, he was energetic in all his business and a successful farmer.  He was a loving husband, an indulgent father, a good neighbor and kind to all with whom he was associated, and was every ready with kind words and a helping hand to those in distress. 

Bro. Miller was married in 1862 to Christina Kelly of this county, who survives him.  He leaves three sons and one daughter: Mrs. Lavina Nuckols, Andrew, Clifford and Sidney, the three former residing in this county and the latter in Helena, Montana, all of whom were present in his last hours.  After the funeral discourse preached by Elder Lockhart, of St. Joseph, at the Long Branch church he was buried in the Long Branch cemetery, which was witnessed by a very large concourse of people.

Subject: Charles Ford Morgan

After an illness of about a year C. F. Morgan passed to the great beyond at the hospital in St. Joseph Friday and the services were held at the Long Branch church Monday with the address by Rev. A. C. Johnson and burial was in the cemetery nearby. 

Charles Ford Morgan, son of John W. and Sarah Ann Morgan, was born in Scott county, Ky., January 12, 1863.  He departed this life December 30, 1922.  He moved and settled east of St. Joseph in the year 1881.  In the year 1891 he moved to Andrew county where he has since resided.  Mr. Morgan was an active farmer, he and his brother James having been partners until 1911.  He was the president of the Farmer's Exchange at the time of his death and was an honored upright progressive and beloved citizen of the county. 

March 24, 1897, he married Lucy Belle Swink.  To them were born five children, four of whom are still living.  Ida Elizabeth died at the age of nine months.  The living children are John W., James H., Estelle E. and Charles B.  Two brothers and two sisters survive, W. M. Morgan of St. Joseph and G. E. Morgan of Savannah; Mrs. Lizzie Swink and Mrs. J. C. Glasgow of Savannah. 

Mr. Morgan was converted at Pleasant View in Buchanan county at the age of 21 and later moved his membership to New Hope church, then when New Hope was disbanded, he united with the M. E. Church, South at Savannah.  Of this church he was an honored member at the time of his death.  Mr. Morgan was one of the best of neighbors and a friend to all.  To his family, no man could have been better.  His life will ever remain as an example of good citizenship to everyone who knew him.  The family have [sic] the sincere sympathy of all.

Little Ida Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of C. F. Morgan and wife died at their home near Kodiak at 11 o'clock Wednesday evening, August 9, age 9 months and 4 days.  The remains were brought to Long Branch to rest in the cemetery.  Services were conducted by Rev. Hayne, of Savannah. 

Little dear, we hope to meet you
When the day of life is fled,
Then in heaven with joy to greet you,
Where no farewell tears are shed.

J. P. Morgan, who has lived east of Savannah for several years, had been ailing since February with heart trouble, and Wednesday afternoon about 1 o'clock, he started to the barn to hitch up the team to come to town for medical aid and fell to the ground unconscious in the path. Mrs. Morgan telephoned Dr Myers but life had passed before she had finished telephoning. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at Long Branch by Rev. A. R. Hunt. Besides his wife and three small children, he leaves several brothers and sisters including Mrs. Swink and Mrs. John Glasgow of Savannah. Mr. Morgan was a well respected man with a kindly happy disposition. He was born in Scott county, Kentucky and was fifty-nine years, five months and twenty-seven days old.

John W. Morgan, who would have been 90 years old next April, passed away at the home of his son C. F. Morgan, east of Savannah December 3. He had been confined to his room four years having fallen and broken his hip causing him to be an invalid.


The funeral sermon was preached Monday afternoon at the Long Branch church by Rev. W. C. Cowart and the body was placed in the cemetery near by the side of his wife who died in 1910.


Mr. Morgan was born in Kentucky April 25, 1827, came to Buchanan county in 1881 and shortly after to Andrew County. He joined the M. E. church in Buchanan county thirty three years ago and removed his membership to New Hope. Last year he was enrolled in the home department of the M. E. Church South, Sunday school.

Mrs. Mary E. Kelsey, 53, died at her home near Rochester Tuesday.

Died Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, Mrs. Delilah Barada of congestion of the lungs.

Deceased was born in Ohio, July 4, 1821, and has lived in St. Joseph forty-three years.  She leaves but one daughter to mourn her death.

Mrs. Mary Carl, 72 years old, widow of James D. Carl, died yesterday at the residence of her son, Oscar Carl, 2540 Jule street.  Besides the son with whom she had been making her home, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Henry Petrie, 920 North Second street.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the home of her son, Rev. C. M. Chilton, pastor of the First Christian church, of which she was a member, officiating.

One by one the old landmarks and pioneer settlers are passing away, constantly reminding us of the ever consuming process of time which illegible the way of all earth.  Joseph Reddick, sen., died at the home of his son-in-law, Judge Joseph Peters, near Cosby, at 11 o'clock a.m., on Friday, October 9, 1891; his age is 91 years, 8 months and 23 days.  The funeral took place Saturday, October 10, and the remains were placed in the Long branch cemetery to peacefully repose until that Great Day.  Joseph Reddick, sen., was born near Oxford, Ohio, in the year of 1800; after a brief residence in Indiana, he removed to this State, of which he has been a resident for more than forty years.  He was a devoted Christian and a member of the Christian church, at Long Branch.  He leaves five sons and one daughter, three of whom live in this county, Benj. and Wm. Reddick and Mrs. Joseph Peters, James, M. Reddick lived near Coffeyville, Kans.; Joseph, Jr., and Payton Reddick reside near Seattle, Washington.  Grandpa is borne to that land whence no traveler returns.

Subject: Mary (Roberts) Wright

Last Friday, August 14, Mrs. Mary Wright died at the residence of her son, E. C. Wright, east of Savannah, aged 79 years, 1 month and 20 days.  She was a native of Ohio, where she was married to John Wright, who died about eleven years ago.  They came to Barry county, to this State in 1844, and to Andrew county in 1849, and ever after resided here.  Four children were born to them, her son E. C. Wright being the sole survivor of the family.  Deceased was a member of the Long Branch Christian church for the last forty-one years, and died in Christian fortitude.  Her remains were buried in the Long Branch cemetery, last Saturday, August 15, being followed to their last resting place by many friends.

Mr. E. C. Wright and family desire to warmly thank the many kind friends who rendered valuable assistance and aid during the protracted sickness of the deceased.

Double Funeral

Old Martin VanSchoiack died in St. Joseph asylum last Sat. Remains were returned to the old homestead on Sunday, in Jefferson township. Among others waiting was the corpse of James Gabbert, about 40 years, who has been raised in the VanSchoiack family. He died about one hour before body arrived from St. Joe. Both were buried on Monday in Long Branch Cemetery.
