Site(s) Are Back Up

Just to let y’all know, the sites are back up — I think. There are still problems, but they’re mostly functional.

The Facebook page has been deactivated. If you want updates, you’ll have to check here — there’s an RSS feed — but I also don’t know how much longer I’ll be using this blog, either. They’ve “improved” WordPress and changed the entire user interface. Good for them, not so good for me as, as things are now, I’m just not interested in relearning this thing again.

We shall see.

Better Search Capability is Here!

I’ve been getting an unusually high number of emails lately from people who can’t find stuff. I readily admit that all the “What if we did THIS!” ideas have resulted in a labyrinth that’s hard to navigate, even for me and I’m the one who put this stuff here.

Turns out, when they can’t find something, they’re in the wrong section of the site. Don’t you hate it when website goddesses think you should figure this out on your own? Me, too! I’ve always considered this blog section to be the front door, but hardly anyone hits this page first, if at all.

The content management systems (CMS) that I use to try to reign in the chaos are notoriously lacking in search capabilities. Additionally, I remembered the other day that Monica doesn’t favor PDFs because the content might not show in search results. (The PDFs themselves should . . . [Yes! There’s more!]

Need a Hero?

It’s true — there are still heroes looking out for the rest of us!

I’d like to give a big shout-out to David Lingren of Fair Trade Judaica, author of the Media Library Assistant plugin for WordPress. If you take a peek at the support threads for the plugin, you can see how diligent David is about solving the problems his users have.

Recently I’ve been looking for a few plugins to solve some other issues. I always look at the support threads first. For one thing, you can see if a plugin has been abandoned. But, and more importantly, you can also see how the developer handles issues — and how users are treated. It’s pretty discouraging to see some of the responses. The conversations back and forth get more and more heated and the thread is closed, usually without resolution. And . . . [Yes! There’s more!]

Oops!

Well, I was trying to get fancy — actually just consistent, but lately that’s fancy 🙂 — and made a mess of the thumbnails on the Media Library page. No worries! The links still work, it’s just ugly right now and, as luck would have it, I have a very important date. Should be all good by tomorrow. 🙂
