ASKEW, ESKEW, REYNOLDS posted by Pat Eskew on Wednesday, January 1, 1997
My grandfather was Richard ASKEW (ESKEW) born in Sumner County, TN on 28 Sep 1830. He married Margaret Emily REYNOLDS on 15 Aug 1853 in Pittsfield, IL. They had nine children: Alfred, b. in IL; Harriett, Archibald, John W., Ida Almanine, Charles & Thomas (twins), all born in Macon County MO; and Franklin and Joseph L, born in Randolph Co., MO. The family later resided in Laynesville, a riverboat township in Saline County that no longer exists, but which was located near Slater. My father was Thomas. He grew up in Slater, attended school in Slater, and started working for the railroads at Slater. Later, he chose to spell his name ESKEW — and I think Frank and Joe did also. Richard died on 12 Apr 1914 at Higginsville, MO. Margaret Emily Reynolds Askew died 11 Feb 1917 at Springfield MO. I obtained this info by researching Richard's Civil War record. I am age 75, and hope to get acquainted with descendants of my aunt and uncles named above. Please write Pat Eskew, 1745 Hazelnut Lane #5, Cordova, TN 38018 or e-mail me at the address below.

Eleanor - 1856, John Lackland Harding III - 1857, Harolde - 1859, Frank - 1861, Joseph C. - 1862, Robert - 1864, Henrietta 1873. Fought with the Confederacy, returned after the war to his farm. Have 1870 Census listing him back in Grand Pass with family. Eleanor and Frank were not listed. At some time in the mid 1870's, John may have died and Henrietta sold the farm. She is buried in MD, and we only have record of Joseph, who moved to PA. Trying to find out if John III stayed and ran the farm after his fathers death. Am trying to find out if John Lackland Harding Jr is buried in MO, at the Mount Nebo cemetery.

EMM, HUKILL, MAUPIN, MENAGER, SAPPINGTON, SMITH, SWAP, WILSON posted by Paul Grisham on Saturday, February 1, 1997
I have a document that lists some Saline County members of the 71st Enrolled Missouri Militia (a Union Regiment). This unit was formed in 1862 and was posted to Lexington, Mo. where it participated in the Lone Jack battle. The document is really a set of letters and orders concerning a Saline County resident and member of the 71st, Claudius J. MENAGER. Mr. Menager was a very unfortunate individual. After being discharged from the 71st EMM for a medical problem (hernia) in late 1862, he had the misfortune of being conscripted by a Col Gordon of Maj Gen Prices Confederate forces during that individual's invasion of Missouri in 1864. Mr. Menager escaped the rebel forces after 8 days in the vicinity of Westport only to be captured by Union forces in Wyandotte County Kansas and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Indiana. The document and affidavits were evidently compiled by Mr. Menager's brother Peter Menager of Leavenworth Kansas and sent to Secretary of War Stanton. The effort was successful and Mr. Menager was released in January of 1865. Some of the names in the documents are Franklin SWAP, CoE 4th Cav EMM, Provost Marshall; W.A. WILSON, Lt Col 71st Regt. EMM; E HUKILL; PE. MAUPIN, Clerk of the Saline County Court; ___ SMITH, Sheriff of Saline Co.; F.M. SAPPINGTON. There are others if you are interested. If possible, I would like to know if there are any descendents of Claudius J. Menager still in Saline Co. or if you know of any doing research on the Menagers as I have a quantity of letters between the Menager brothers and their family in Gallipolis Ohio. I would be happy to turn these letters over to a member of the family.

FARRAR, HANLEY, MARSHALL, MCDANIEL posted by Betsy Thomas on Saturday, March 1, 1997
I am looking for descendants of my great grandmother, Emily Louisa HANLEY (aka Ludie or Lutie) who married Edward Virgil FARRAR in Saline County, MO in 1865. I believe she is the daughter of Archibald HANLEY, who is shown on the 1850 census in Saline co. with a wife Emily, and eight children, the youngest being listed as Louisa E. I want to believe this is really Emily Louisa (and they listed her name backwards!) at the age of 4 months. Other children in that family were: Samuel-age 15, Amanda-13, Ann-11, John-9, Elizabeth -6, Palmyra-4, and William-2. I believe there were three more children after the 1850 census since I have a copy of Archibald's will naming Lillie (who married A.R. MARSHALL), Robert Lee HANLEY) and Daisy HANLEY. There may have been one other child named Virgie (who married Henry MCDANIEL). However, I could have two Archibald HANLEY families mixed up. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have access to the 1860 0r 1870 census that could check this for me? Are there descendants out there researching? Emily Louisa (Ludie or Lutie) and Edward Virgil FARRAR were found on the 1880 census in Randolph County, MO but they were married in Saline Co.,which must have been the home of her parents at that time. I will gladly share my data with anyone who can help me. Archibald HANLEY was found on the 1840 census in Callaway county, MO.

NICHOLS, RAINES posted by Kyle J. Wear on Thursday, May 1, 1997
I am looking for information on Francis Marion NICHOLS. He was born October 1835 (Shelby Co. KY) and died about 1905 (Saline Co., MO). He married Margaret Ann RAINES on 25 Dec 1861 (Pettis Co., MO) and had the following children: James Thomas (b. May 1866 d. About 1924), John Henry (b. 31 May 1868 d. 1 Oct 1942), William (b. 1870), Mollie (b. 1873), Lizzie (b. 1875), Edward (b. Dec 1879), Lonnie (b. June 1882), and Rosa (b. March 1886). Currently, I am attempting to find descendents as well as determining the ancestry this family. Francis Marion NICHOLS is apparently orphaned at a young age and is first seen on the 1850 Saline Co., MO census with his widowed mother, Mary A. NICHOLS (b. about 1814 d. after 1880), brother Richard E. NICHOLS (b. about 1836), and sister Elizabeth NICHOLS (b. May 1849). Mary A. NICHOLS is again seen on the 1880 census with her son Richard Epperson NICHOLS (who is divorced and living with his mother). If anyone has any information pertaining to this family, please contact me.

LYNN posted by Rebekah Lynn on Sunday, June 1, 1997
I'm looking for any evidence of the family of William Franklin LYNN, who, with his wife Susan, raised his family in Grand Pass, Saline County, in the late 1800's. His sons were Charles, Ernest and Robert Howard Lynn. His daughters were Opal and Lola Lynn. I am descended from his youngest, Robert, my grandfather. I have a photo of the family that was taken around the turn of the century, but so far in my research, I haven't found much else. Family stories rumor that there were two Lynn brothers who fought on different sides of the Civil War. My grandfather remembered a year the Missouri flooded the family home: they lived upstairs, with a rowboat tied to the inside bannister of the staircase! There is rumor that the family may have come from Kentucky. Other family names (as evidenced by middle names) include Mallory and Northrup. At one point, my grandfather, his father and brothers rode a spur of the railroad out to southern Colorado, homesteaded and built a cabin. They were not successful in farming this homestead, but an acre or so is still retained by the family for sentimental reasons. Any information you can find to share would be appreciated!

DOOLEY, MARR, MORROW posted by BobbiK on Friday, August 1, 1997
I have this obituary in my posession as follows: 26 OCT 1920 ( article only news paper name ?) Marshall, MO - Death Of Mrs. Martha MARR (sic MORROW) passes away in kansas city after brief illness, funeral at Campbell'S Chapel. At the home of son George H. Morrow, in Kansas City, Mrs Martha A. Morrow, the widow of the late David J. Morrow died Monday, October 25, at 8:30 P. M. of hardening of the arteries and other complications. Saline having been the home of Mrs Morrow and her family for a number of years, the remains will be brought here for burial in Ridge Park Cemetery. They will arrive Wednesday on the 12:58 train and will be taken to the R. W. Campbell Undertaking establishment and the funeral will take place from the Campbell Chapel at 2:30 PM and the interment will be on the Morrow lot in Ridge Park Cemetery. The Rev. J. M. Alexander will conduct the funeral service, the deceased having been an influential and active member of the Christian Church in Marshall for a number of years. Mrs. Martha(Dooley)Morrow was born in Kentucky near Winchester, about 75 years ago, and was reared and married there, to the late David Morrow. They, however, moved to Saline, when the two surviving sons James and George Morrow, both of Kansas City, were children and the home of the family for a great many years was the suburban place sold recently by S W Wilkerson. The husband of the deceased died at this home about 25 years ago and the son at whose home the mother died was married at this former Morrow homestead. The sons and mother left Saline some time ago and have lived in Kansas City since, but, have never ceased to call Saline and Marshall home, and like so many of our former citizens bring the mother to Ridge Park for burial. She was one of the mothers "in Izreal", whose consecrated Christian life was spent in service for the master and doing good to those about her and in the county in which she lived. Until moving to Kansas City she was a member of the Marshall Christian Church and prominently identified with its activities. Mrs. Morrow has a wide circle of relatives in Marshall and Saline who will be grieved to learn of her death. She was the daughter of the late Javez Dooley and was the cousin of the former citizen W. H. Dooley (William Harold) Does anyone have any connections with Mrs. Martha A. (DOOLEY) MORROW or the DOOLEY family? Many Thanks

They had an older son born in Saline County before my grandfather and he died within a couple of years. I would like to know more about that. Also, if I could get more info on their marriage ceremony, I would like that. George had two sisters also. One was named Mary and she married James E. HAZELL; they had two children that I know of, Earl and Rubie. I found them in the 1900 census in Saline County. I want to trade and share information.

ERWIN, LYON, MONROE, WOLFSKILL posted by Randal Dinehart on Monday, December 1, 1997
In a family Bible owned by my wife's Uncle Horace W. WOLFSKILL (Saline Co., born abt. 1910), we have found a list of ERWIN names going back to the late 1700's. Also in the uncle's collection are tintypes and photos owned by Hannah Susan ERWIN who married William Barney WOLFSKILL around 1880. Other family members born in 1850s include Rhoda Belle MONROE and George T. LYON. Finally, we found a paste scrapbook of newspaper obituaries from the late 1800's for Saline County. I have constructed a pedigree from W.B. WOLFSKILL to present. If there is any genealogical work already prepared for these people or any interest in the data, please contact.

EDWARDS, FISHER, MOON posted by Malcolm Swan on Monday, December 1, 1997
My grandmother, Mary Susan FISHER (nee. EDWARDS) owned a farm in Saline County beginning 1913, and sold it about 1966. We want to learn how she happened to obtain the property - believing that would lead us to her father (William Jefferson EDWARDS) , or her deceased mother's (Sarah Catherine MOON) parents. Is there anyone in Saline County willing to check this out at the courthouse and report back relative to the land and probate records for time around 1913. Anything found would be most appreciated. Many Thanks -

TRENT posted by Pat Adams on Tuesday, December 9, 1997
I am researching Saline County records on my great-grandfather, William H. TRENT, and his family. He was born (approx.) Nov. 1849 in Virginia (exactly where is unkown at this time) and migrated to Saline County, Missouri during the Civil War. He is shown in the 1870 census as a farm worker in Miami Township, Saline County, Missouri. I do not know the name of his wife, but his children included my grandfather, Henry W. Trent born May 3, 1886 in Saline County (most likely Marshall), Missouri. Other children may include Helen Trent (b. January 1883), Fletcher Trent (b. May 1880), Laura Trent (b. September 15, 1879), Frank Trent (b. June 18, 1873) and Kate Trent (birth date unknown). My grandfather always spoke of Marsahall, Missouri as his "home town," so I assume this is where the majority of the Trent children were born and/or raised. I'm hoping there is someone interested in doing research for a marriage record for William H. Trent and death records on William H. and his wife which would, hopefully, provide information on their birth dates, places of birth and, in turn on their parents. Birth records for the children listed above, newspaper records of births and deaths, tax records, etc. would also be very helpful. If you are interested, I can be reached by E-mail or by telephone at (718) 469-4032.
