- Death of Benj. R. Holt.
Another landmark is missed. Mr. Benjamin R. Holt, or better known as Uncle Ben Holt, died of Bright's disease at the residence of his son-in-law, Abel F. Daily, in the Cherry Grove neighborhood, Andrew county, Missouri, at 6 p.m., Thursday, January 26, 1893, aged 79 years, 11 months and 15 days. He had been confined to the house since June last but claimed to be ready at any time to meet the angel of death. There were present at his bedside when the dread summons came his loved children, Mrs. A. F. Daily, Mrs. Louisa Woodcock, Mrs. Judge J. L. Stanton and Mrs. J. F. Young, and Mr. A. F. Daily and Judge Stanton, who did all in their power to make his end as pleasant as possible. He was : a devoted husband, kind father and good neighbor and his excellent traits of character endeared him to those who knew him. He was a friend to the poor and no one ever went to him in want and left without receiving assistance. His former slaves were so attached to him that when they would visit him of late years it was a touching sight to see them shed tears when giving their former old and kind master good-by.
He was a charter member of Savannah Lodge No. 71, A. F. and A. M., and was buried by the members of that lodge in the Daily cemetery, on his old homestead, between the remains of his two wives, Friday afternoon, January 27th in the presence of his sorrowing children, relatives, neighbors and many friends.
Mr. Benjamin R. Holt was born in Orange county, North Carolina. He emigrated to Clay county, Mo., in 1832 and worked on a farm in that county the first year. After that he was employed at the Indian Agency, Bee Creek, Platte county and at the Agency at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and worked for this agency until the fall of 1839. The following spring he was married in Clay county, Mo., to Miss Sarah E. King, and shortly after moved to Andrew county and preempted the land on which Judge C. M. Daily now lives and owns. He lived on that farm until 1875 excepting one year, '49 and '50 spent in California.
His wife died Nov. 15, 1857 leaving him eight children, six of whom are now living, and are, Mrs. Louisa Woodcock, Mrs. Judge J. L. Stanton, Mrs. A. F. Daily, of this county, Mrs. J. F. Young, of Nodaway county, and John M. and B. K. Holt prominent stock dealers of Miles City, Montana. One daughter Mrs. Sophronia Webb died in 1859 and another Mrs. C. M. Daily in 1880.
On December 25, 1858, he married as his second wife Mrs. Rebecca Officer, of Clay county, from this union there were no children and this wife died December 17, 1874.
Mr. Holt was a member of the first grand jury of this county. He also helped to survey the land on which Savannah now stands, and was one of the commissioners who located the county seat at Savannah.

The grim avenger has stalked in our midst and taken from us our respected citizen, Uncle Benjamin Holt, who was called hence last Thursday evening, surrounded by his sorrowing children and friends. He was interred in the Daily cemetery, (which was his old homestead), under Masonic rites, being a member of No. 71. The bereaved family have our consolation and sympathy.
