    • A Venerable Citizen at Rest.

Mr. Jesse J. Hiatt died at 11 o'clock Wednesday night, March 20, 1902, at his home a few miles north of Lockwood. Funeral services were conducted at the house Thursday by Rev. S. L. Collins, the burial being at the Lockwood cemetery.

Mr. Hiatt had been gradually declining in strength for more than a year until he died.  He was born in Kentucky March 29, 1818, and while an infant was brought by his parents to Clay county, Mo., where he resided until his manhood when he removed to Platte county where he married Miss Alretta Elkins who survives him. In 1867 Mr. Hiatt with his family removed to Dade county buying the land and establishing the home where he died.

Mr. Hiatts [sic] death removes from our vicinity one of its best and most estimable citizens whose good works will live in the memory of many relatives and friends he has left.

Their children who are living are Mrs. Joseph Roseman, Mrs. J. H. Harris and John Hiatt, of Lockwood, Don Hiatt, of Rye Valley, Oregon and Mrs. Henry Taylor, of Gillette, Wyoming. Two daughters have died. Mr. Hiatt left two brothers living, Mr. J. H. Hiatt of Lockwood, and J. A. Hiatt, of Worth county, Mo. He was an uncle of our townsman, S. J. Hiatt, and there are a number of other relatives in our county.
