| 1351 | Rites held for J. Burrows Graveside services were held on Monday at the Winters Cemetery for John E. Burrows, 56, of Fairfield, with the Rev. William Walsh, of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, officiating. Mr. Burrows died in a Fairfield hospital on May 27. A native of Napa, he had lived in Fairfield many years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fairfield Post No. 2333, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a retired engineer for the state of California after 15 years of service. Survivors include two daughters, Marylnn Burrows of Sacramento, Marian Zavaglie of Honolulu; one son, Harry Burrows of Reno; and two sisters, Margaret Grubbs and Frances Bentley. | 1352 | Roberts, Robert D. 1931-2020 OCT 24, 2020 REA, Mo. - Robert D. "Bob" Roberts, 89 of Rea, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. He was born September 5, 1931, to Lawrence and Opal Roberts. Bob proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in Korea, but his true passion was farming which he did all of his life. He also enjoyed his 2-cylinder John Deere tractors. Bob married Joyce Reece on February 20, 1955, and his life was centered around the family that he loved and cherished. They had just recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Bob was preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, Lawrence Carroll "Buck" Roberts; and a sister, Patricia Kay Roberts. Survivors include: his wife, Joyce; son, Randy (Linda) Roberts; daughter, Deann (Bill) Schellhorn; grandchildren, Kurt (Darcy) Roberts, Kelly (Tim) Dolan, Ryan (Amy) Schellhorn, Scott (Nicole) Schellhorn, Troy (Megan) Schellhorn; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn (Wayland) Holbrook, Carolyn (Dan) Harrington, Barbara (Ken) Jones, Karen (Willy) McGaughey; and several nieces and nephews. | 1353 | Services Monday For George Wolz CHAMOIS (Special) – Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church here for Jacob Wolz, 69, Chamois, who died Thursday at Still Hospital. The Rev. A. H. Grelner will officiate with burial in the parish cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at a local funeral chapel. Mr. Wolz was born May 9. 1890, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wolz. In October 1912, he married Miss Minnie Boss at Chamois. Survivors include two sons, Herbert and Oscar Wolz. of Chamois; one daughter, Mrs. William Wiebberg of Mokane; one brother, John Wolz of the state of Washington; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Giesing and Mrs. Benjamin Means, both of Washington, Mo., and Mrs. George Schmidt, of Pueblo, Colo., and Mrs. Harry Kampshroder of Washington, No., and eleven grandchildren. | 1354 | Sharon K. Hurst 1952-2012 SAVANNAH, Mo. – Sharon K. (Tilson) Hurst, 59, Savannah, passed away Friday, February 17, 2012 at her home. Sharon was born March 15, 1952, in St. Joseph to Emery and Wanda (Caselman) Tilson, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Central High School and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Missouri Western State University. Sharon had most recently been the business office assistant for Aseracare. Previously she had been a para at Savannah High School, customer service technician for the IRS and worked at Westab. Sharon married Gary Hurst on August 12, 1972, at Green Valley Baptist Church in St. Joseph; he survives of the home. Sharon was a very active member of the First Baptist Church, as well as Women on Mission. She enjoyed scrapbooking, but her family and friends were most important to her. She loved them dearly and was devoted to them all. Her husband, Gary was her best friend. Additional survivors include daughter, Heidi Hurst, Los Angeles, Calif.; son, Dustin (Katie) Hurst, Columbia, Mo.; granddaughter, Maryam; brother, Bob (Susie) Guinn; sisters, Sondra (Steve) Allen, Carol (Dennis) McGarry, all of St. Joseph; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; brothersand sisters-in-law. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Savannah. Leola "Pinky" (Cochrane) Stanton, born February 11, 1925, in Mound City, Missouri, died Saturday, January 21, 2017, due to complications from flu and prolonged illness. Her husband of almost 70 years, Keith Stanton, and children, Sarah and Joe, were at her bedside at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. Leola trained for nursing at Sisters Hospital in St. Joseph, and had a long career in various areas of nursing, changing the lives of many patients, families, students, co-workers and friends. She will be missed by them, as well as her other children, Ralph, Paul and K.C.; grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren; as well as all of those who provided her excellent care during her illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Friday, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Savannah. Interment: Savannah Cemetery. | 1357 | Steven K. Thrasher Mr. Steven Keith Thrasher, 37, Bolckow, was born December, 17, 1992, in St. Joseph and died April 9, 1992, in a St. Joseph hospital, after a lengthy illness. He had resided his entire life in the Bolckow community, and was a farmer. Mr. Thrasher was a graduate of Fillmore High School, class of 1972, and had attended Missouri Western State College. He was a member of the Antioch Christian Church, Fillmore. Surviving are his parents, Keith L. Thrasher and the former Wanda M. Praiswater, both of the home; a sister, Pamela Hurley, St. Joseph; his paternal grandmother, Myrtle Thrasher, Savannah; a niece, Melissa Salmons, St. Joseph; and cousins, aunts and uncles. Funeral services were conducted April 13 in the Antioch Christian Church with Rev. Bobby Bell officiating. Interment was in the Fillmore Cemetery. | 1359 | Taps Are Sounded John Hurst, a veteran of the Civil war, living in the Marion district, has answered his last roll call and taps were sounded for him at his home on Thursday last, October 7th, 1909. He served in the Union army as a member of the original 13th Missouri Infantry, and was taken prisoner at the battle of Lexington, which was fought in September, 1861. On being paroled, he afterwards enlisted in the 7th Kansas, but was discharged on account of being paroled and not exchanged. John Ernst Hurst was born in Baden, Germany, January 8th, 1832, and died at his home, in Nodaway township, October 7th, 1909, aged 77 years, 8 months and 29 days. He came to America with his parents, in 1845, landing at New York, and went on to Mount Eaton, Ohio, where he was apprenticed to the shoemaker's trade, and afterwards followed this trade for a number of years, achieving good success. He came to Missouri and settled in this county, where he continually resided, except during the war, until his death. Uncle John was Fillmore's village shoemaker in the early days, and it is told of him that when in need of stock and supplies for his work, he only regarded it as pastime to walk to St. Joseph, make his purchases and return the same way the following day. He succeeded in accumulating sufficient means to buy a farm in this county, near the Hollister Mill which he owned and occupied at the time of his death, and was managed by one of his sons. He married Miss Celia Cooper, soon after the war. She died in 1868. In 1872, he married Miss Elizabeth Forney, who died November 20th, 1907. To the latter union, four sons and three daughters were born: two daughters died in infancy. He leaves to mourn their loss, which is his gain, a brother, J. F., of Angleton, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Philip Forney, of Nodaway township; five children, Philip E., Wm. W., Frederick O., John H., and Flora A., all living on the homeplace, and a host of other relatives and friends, for he was universally loved and esteemed. He professed faith in Christ in early life, joining the M. E. church. Later he became a member of the United Brethren church, and the funeral services were held from the M. E. church in Fillmore, Saturday last, the burial being in the Fillmore cemetery. Rev. Phend, pastor of the U. B. church, at Maitland, conducted the services. | 1360 | Teacher Charged In Boy's Crash Bee Metro Staff A spokesman for the San Juan Unified School District said Friday no immediate disciplinary action will be taken against a schoolteacher arrested on charges of giving liquor to a 16-year-old former student the night the boy got into a high-speed car crash in May. Richard [sic] Robert D. Stevens, 50, an eighth-grade teacher at Will Rogers Intermediate School, was charged Wednesday with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was released on $1,000 bail. Two people were seriously injured in the crash. The boy was convicted of felony drunken driving and felony hit-and-run June 23 and sentenced to 18 months to three years in California Youth Authority. "Being arrested is different from being convicted," said Richard Schromm, personnel director for the San Juan school district. "If he is convicted, we'll review it. If it is something we are able to take action on, we certainly would do whatever action is permissible." In a related arrest Friday, detectives booked Robert Paxton, 51, a Sacramento truck driver, on charges of engaging in oral sex with the same boy. The car the boy was driving when the accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on May 14 had been a present from Paxton, the youth's mother said. Sheriff's Detective Pat Flood said Stevens, who once lived with the boy, admitted giving him two alcoholic drinks that night, but the youth had a .19 blood-alcohol level, nearly twice the legal limit for intoxication. Stevens could not be reached for comment. California Highway Patrol spokesman Bob Benton said the boy was driving west on Madison Avenue east of Milburn Street at speeds between 70 to 100 mph and smashed into a sloer-moving vehicle that burst into flames on impact. The driver of that car, Christopher John Carleton, 21, was burned over 23 percent of his body. Carleton's passenger, 18-year-old Diane Serraro, was burned over 55 percent of her body. | 1365 | Thomas B. Pulley Passes Away. Thomas B. Pulley was born Sept. 1st, 1856, in Pettis county, Mo., and died at his home at Washburn, Mo., Sunday, May 23, 1920, aged 64 years, 8 months and 22 days. He was married in 1879 to Nancy R. Russell of Fairview, Mo. To this union five children were born, one dying in infancy. The living are, Mrs. L. R. Smith, Pineville, Mo.; Mrs. A. P. Ledenham and C. E. Pulley, of Washburn, Mo.; and Earl R. Pulley of Farson, Wyoming. All were present except the son Earl. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two sisters. The sisters are Mrs. Hettie Carpenter and Mrs. J. B. Thompson of Fairview, Mo. He was converted in 1884 [and] united with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Altho his suffering was long he bore it very patiently. He had many times during his sickness comforted his wife and children by saying "I am ready to go." Memorial services were conducted on Monday afternoon at the Exeter Baptist Church by the Pastor, Rev. Vanzant. Burial was made in the Maplewood cemetery of Exeter, Mo. | 1366 | Thrasher, Wanda Aug 12, 2026 Wanda Thrasher, 97, passed away on Aug. 11, 2026, at Vintage Gardens Assisted Living, in St. Joseph. Wanda was born on Feb. 15, 1929, in Fillmore, Missouri, to Manford and Mollie Praiswater. She graduated from Fillmore High School and attended Northwest Missouri State University for two years where she met her husband, Keith Thrasher. They were married for 63 years. Wanda was engaged in farming with her husband for 42 years, eventually moving to St. Joseph, but loved her "big white house on the hill" and always considered it her home. Wanda was a member of the First Baptist Church in Savannah. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and son, Steven. Surviving family includes daughter, Pam Hurley; granddaughter, Missy (Ryan) McClurg; great-granddaughters, Rylan (Austin) Dawkins and Maggie (Tayton) Terry; and great-great-grandson, Bridger Dawkins. Special thank you to the caregivers and staff at Vintage Gardens and Mosaic Hospice. There will be no public visitation. A private family service will be held at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel with interment to follow at the Fillmore Cemetery. | 1367 | Two Killed in Head-On Crash on Belt Highway Two men were killed in a car-truck crash at 10:50 this morning on the Belt Highway. The dead were identified as A. B. Fisher, 19, rural route No. 2, Stewartsville, Mo., and Ronny F. Weipert, 18, of rural route No. 1, Easton. The accident occurred just north of Gene Field rods in the east lane of traffic. Two men in the truck were not injured. According to police, the southbound car went out of control and swerved head-oh into the northbound truck. The car and the cab of the truck burst into flames leading nearby residents to believe a gasoline tanker had exploded. Patrolman John Hartnett said Fisher was thrown from the car onto the east bank. Weipert was pinned in the car. Firemen from two companies quickly extinguished the fire. Officers said the car's gasoline tank probably exploded and residents several blocks away reported hearing a "loud boom." Darrell Gene Kahl, 24, Hortonville, Minn., driver and owner of the truck, told police he was driving slowly up over a slight hill and the car suddenly appeared in front of him. Kahl and a passenger in the truck, Roger Olson, 18, Chokio, Minn., jumped from the truck before it was engulfed in flames. They immediately ran for help, but the Missouri men were dead when police and the St. Joseph Ambulance Service arrived. Dr. s. E. Meluney, county coroner, said death probably was instantaneous. It was difficult to determine who had been driving the car but it was registered to the Stewartsville man. Sergt. J. T. Farmer and Patrolman Arch Albertson, Roy Tichenor, and Charles Wells assisted in directing traffic off the Belt highway during a heavy downpour immediately following the accident. The four lanes were blocked for more than an hour while the ambulance men removed the bodies. The tractor of the truck was only slightly burned. | 1369 | Vacaville Schoolboy Is Killed VACAVILLE – A 15-year-old Vacaville High School student was struck and killed by an oil truck Monday while his father looked on in horror, the California Highway Patrol reported. Dead is David Morris Onstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Onstad, 301 First St., Vacaville. The youth was standing on the Midway Road overcrossing at 1-80, about midway between Vacaville and Dixon, waiting for his father to pick him up. When he saw his father's car approaching, the youth darted across the roadway into the path of an oncoming truck, the CHP said. Driver of the oil truck was Eugene W. Kliever, 43, of 811 West A St., Dixon. The truck is owned by the Union Oil Co. The Onstad youth was dead arrival at Fairfield Initercommunity Hospital. | 1373 | William H. Wibberg Services were to be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos for William H. Wibberg, 67, of rural Jefferson City, a native of Frankenstein. The Rev. Kevin Clohessy was to conduct the funeral for Mr. Wibberg, who died Monday at a Jefferson City hospital, with burial in the parish cemetery. Mr. Wibberg was born Sept. 26, 1929, to Conrad Wibberg and the former Mary Christina Huesgen. He was married April 11, 1964, at Holts Summit to the former Clara Nelson, who survives at the home. A lifelong resident of central Missouri, Mr. Wibberg attended school at Frankenstein and was employed for many years as a heavy-equipment operator. He also was a commercial fisherman on the Missouri River for more than 50 years. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier parish and the Osage City Community Center. He also is survived by two sons, William H. Wibberg II of Jefferson City and Vernon Wibberg of Helena; seven daughters, Patricia Haslag of Loose Creek, Deborth Mehmert of Chamois, Carol Dismang of Jefferson City, Alice Neier of New Bloomfield, Elaine Bledsoe of Mountain City, Phyllis Payne of Cosby and Betty Flowers of Fulton; two sisters, Iona Bond of Taos and Dorothy Morre of West Lafayette, Inc.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. | 1374 | Youth Killed While Running To Meet Dad A 15-year-old Vacaville high school student was struck by truck and killed yesterday afternoon as his father watched. David Morris Onstad, sophomore at Vacaville High School, had been waiting on Midway Road Overcrossing, near Vacaville. for a ride from his father, Morris Onstad. At the moment the father arrived, eastbound, David ran across the road, directly in the path of a westbound Union Oil truck being driven by Eugene Wayne Kliewer, 43, Dixon. The highway patrol report states that the impact knocked the youth 60 feet through the air. His body was 50 feet from the point of impact. He was taken to Intercommunity Hospital by Vacaville ambulance where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. E. D. Lawrence. He suffered multiple head injuries. Patrolmen absolved the truck driver of blame in the accident. | 1375 | Youth, 19, Drowns at Bedford's Lake of Three Fires Stanley Eugene Crippen, of 502½ Woodson, a 1974 graduate of Lafayette High School, drowned Saturday morning in Lake of Three Fires, four miles north of Bedford, Iowa. The drowning occurred about 10 in 10 feet of water and the body was recovered by the life guard crew about 30 minutes later. According to Larry Aldridge, park ranger, the beach had not yet opened for the day at the time of the tragedy and the lifeguards were not on duty. Young Crippen was on an outing at the lake with a group from St. Joseph, according to information received from Bedford. Friends of the youth said he could not swim. Born in St. Joseph, he had resided with Mr. and Mrs. Sid Thornton, route 2, most of his life. Since graduating, however, he had at the Woodson address and had been employed at the Johnson Feed Co., 3002 South 6th. He is survived by his father, Marvin S. Crippen, Amazonia; his mother, Mrs. Darlene Welter Rose, De Kalb; four brothers, Marvin R., Robert J., Mark A. and Bryan Crippen, all of De Kalb; a sister, Miss Peggy Sue Crippen, St. Joseph; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welter, St. Joseph; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Crippen, St. Joseph, and his great-grandfather, Everett Cline, Rushville.
