| 1262 | Allene Reynolds 1917-2011 SAVANNAH, Mo. -- Allene (Meers) Reynolds, 94, Savannah, passed from this life on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Heartland Hospital. She was born April 18, 1917 in Troy, Kan., to Harrison and Nina (Lewis) Meers. Allene married Frank Reynolds on April 3, 1935 in Troy, Kan., and he preceded her in death on August 2, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rosalie Kozak; and a brother, John Meers. Allene was a Psychiatric Aide at the St. Joseph State Hospital. She was a member of the Amazonia Methodist Church and enjoyed playing cards and dancing at the Senior Center. Survivors: daughter, Donna Reynolds, St. Joseph; two brothers: Sam Meers, Amazonia; and Paul Meers, St. Joseph; two sisters, Arminta Steeby and Joyce Owens, both of St. Joseph; several nieces and nephews. | 1263 | Alva L. Reynolds Sr. Alva Lee Reynolds Sr., 57, former Rush township (Buchanan county) constable, died Friday night at Atchison, Kan., hospital. A native of Amazonia, Mo., he moved to the Rushville community 33 years ago. He lived near Sugar Lake, He was farmer. Mr. Reynolds was a member of the Nazarene Church and the Eagles. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lilly Nichols Reynolds, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Harold Molt, Horton, Kan.; six sons, Richard R., Ralph and Leonard Reynolds, all of Atchison; Alva Lee Reynolds Jr., and Ernest Reynolds, both of Rushville; Charles R. Reynolds, St. Joseph; stepmother, Mrs. Emil Dick, Savannah, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. William Dick, St. Joseph; three half sisters, Mrs. Frank Bunsey, Savannah; Mrs. Edna Burshesh, Long Beach, Cal., and Miss Pearl Reynolds, St. Joseph; three half brothers, Dale Reynolds, St. Joseph; Frank Reynolds, Amazonia, and Lee Reynolds, Savannah, and ten grandchildren. | 1264 | ANDREW J. PULLEY. Andrew J. Pulley, who had been ill for something like a year died at Colorado Springs, Sunday morning May 24th at one o'clock. He became suddenly ill a few days previous to his death. His brothers William and Alex both of near Clarksdale were notified of his serious illness and went on the first train to his bedside. They found him better. He was able to recognize them both and at intervals talked to them and inquired of his friends here. However he soon became worse and passed away peacefully Sunday morning after calling his near relatives and friends to him and bidding them a loving good bye. His death was due to congestion of the brain. Andrew J. Pulley was born 36 years ago in Buchanan county. He was the son of D. N. Pulley and wife who early moved to DeKalb county and the family has lived here ever since that time. He leaves a wife and two children, mother, three brothers and five sisters to mourn his death. The brothers and sisters are: Mrs. J. T. Barber, W. N., Mrs. Jas. Sales, Mrs. Carrie Boyer, Carlos, Mrs. John Britt, Mrs. G. U. Brown and Alex. The corpse arrived at Clarksdale Monday at 12 o'clock where the Odd Fellows were in waiting. Funeral services were held at Union chapel at four o'clock, conducted by the Odd Fellows. | 1265 | Arleta Pulley Obituary Arleta Pulley 1935 – 2024 King City, MO: Arleta Pulley, 88, of King City, MO passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at a King City care center. She was born October 5, 1935 on a farm in the Empire Prairie area the daughter of Lewis and Lorene (Cook) Burke. On June 24, 1956, Arleta married Richard Pulley at the Star Chapel Church. Arleta graduated from King City High School and went to Northwest Missouri State College for business training. She later obtained her Bachelor's Degree from Missouri Western State College. She also obtained a Masters Degree from Northwest Missouri State University. Arleta taught a year at King City R-1 before teaching Chapter 1 Reading and Math for 9 years for the Blue Hill Home Corporation. She traveled to schools throughout Northwest Missouri in an RV classroom on wheels equipped with computers and other educational resources. She also taught at the King City-Union Star Preschool for 5 years. Arleta put her faith and trust in God at a young age and this was evident in her life, in her involvement and in her service at the First Christian Church. She loved her family dearly and always looked forward to the holidays with family get-togethers and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arleta was involved in many King City area community organizations and activities including DAR, CWF, H.O.P.E. summer reading program and the Tri-County Living History Museum. She loved music and over the years, played the organ and piano. She gave piano lessons to many youth in the King City community. Arleta loved traveling. She went on many trips through the U.S., trips to London and Switzerland, as well as outings with the First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Marion Burke. Arleta is survived by her loving husband, Richard; sons, Randall (Janet) Pulley of St. Joseph, MO, John (Chris) Pulley of St. Charles, MO and Dan (Julie) Pulley of Fenton, MO; daughter, Judy (Kelvin) Hawkins of King City, MO. Richard and Arleta were also blessed with nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 1, at the First Christian Church, King City, MO under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, King City, MO. Mr. Kneib, a self-employed farmer, was born in Clarksdale on April 24, 1910. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church Hurlingen, Mo.; and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Bertha M. McFadden; his parents, Albert A. and Josephine A.; a sister, Lucille Moon; and a brother, Raymond. | 1268 | At Rest. One of Newton county's most respected citizens has passed from labor to rest. Mr. George W. Carpenter was born in Cooper county, Mo., Nov. 27, 1842. Was married to Miss Hettie A. Pulley in Pettis county, Mo. Dec. 23, 1964. To this union was born seven children, four boys and three girls. All of them are living except one girl. who died in infancy. The children are all grown and married and are living in Newton county. All of them doing well. All of them are members of the Mt. Olive Baptist church except one. Bro. Carpenter moved from Cooper county to Ark., and lived there a short time, then moved to Newton county. Mo, and settled the farm where he died. Hi professed faith in Christ in Sept., 1873. while at work on his farm. He at once united with the Liberty Baptist church, and in the spring of 1874 was ordained a deacon. The Liberty church went down and he united with the Baptist church at Jolly, and later on went in to the organization of the Mt. Olive church of which he was a faithful, devoted member and deacon till death. He was a success as a farmer and by hard work and honest dealings bad gathered about him considerable property. He was in poor health for more than a year and was taken bad with stomach trouble last February from which he suffered greatly. He bore his suffering with great patience, and was never heard to murmur, but often expressed himself as ready and willing to go. He arranged all of his business some time ago, and patiently waited the summons which came at 3:30 A M. June 20, 1903. The family were all at his bedside when the end came, and he sweetly and peacefully passed away without a struggle. Everything that loving hands and skilled physicians could do was done, but to no avail. He was a kind and affectionate husband, a tender and loving father, a generous and honorable citizen, and a consecrated and humble follower of the Blessed Master. He will be greatly missed in the home, in the church and in the community. The funeral was conducted by the writer June 21, at 11 A M in the Mt Olive church, in the presence of the largest assembly I have ever met at that place, after which his body was laid to rest in the Mt. Olive cemetery to await the resurrection trumpet. Bro. Carpenter donated the land for the cemetery and was the first one buried in it. | 1269 | Barnes, Margaret E. 1914-2016 Apr 15, 2016 SAVANNAH, Mo. Margaret E. Barnes, 101, of Savannah, died April 14, 2016, at LaVerna Village. Margaret was born on December 19, 1914, in Amazonia. She attended various grade schools in Andrew County and was a proud graduate of Savannah High School in 1932. Before her retirement from the ASCS office in Savannah, she worked at Dr. Nichols Sanatorium in Savannah. She was a lifelong member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Amazonia, where she was Treasurer of the Ladies Guild for many years. She was also a member of the Savannah Business and Professional Women Organization and very active in the Senior Center, RSVP Organization and Andrew County Swiss Society. On October 13, 1940, she married Ira L. Barnes. He preceded her in death on October 1, 1988. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Oscar A. and Minnie R. (Bechter) Strasser; two brothers, Carl O. and Jacob A. Strasser; two sisters, Helen P. Shreve and Lorene Hainey. Survivors include: two sons, Robert L. (Janet) and John D. (Brenda) Barnes; five grandchildren, Jennifer Shackelford (Josh), Jill Weaver (Eric), Andrew Barnes (Katie), Sara Hare (Wakefield), and Cameron Barnes (Stephanie). There are nine great-grandchildren: Luke and Lex Shackelford, Tucker and Megan Weaver, Squire and Harper Barnes, Billie, Hanner and Jonnie Hare. She also had many beloved nephews, nieces and friends. | 1271 | Bennett, Shirley M. Clayton, Ga. CLAYTON, Ga. - Shirley May Bennett (nee Bechter) passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2026, at the age of 92, following a lengthy battle with multiple myeloma. Shirley was born and raised in Amazonia, Missouri, to the late Rose and John Bechter. She graduated as valedictorian of the Savannah, Missouri, High School Class of 1951, where she was active in 4-H and received the Missouri 4-H State Food Preservation Award. Shirley and her husband, Jack, raised their family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Jacksonville, Florida, before eventually settling in St. Augustine, Florida. There, Shirley built a long and successful career as a Realtor, working in the profession for many years before retiring in 2023. She later moved to Clayton, Georgia, to be near her daughter, Bonnie. Shirley and Jack shared a love of travel and explored the United States extensively while raising their family. After their children were grown, they traveled throughout the world. Switzerland remained Shirley's favorite destination, and she enjoyed visiting there several times with the Swiss Lodge of St. Joseph. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack. She is survived by her son, Tom Bennett (Vanessa); daughter, Bonnie Seay (Rick); grandchildren Amanda Freeman (Eric), Nathan Seay, and Bryan Bennett; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Mota, Cayla Carney, and Jessica Freeman. A funeral service and interment of ashes will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 1 p.m. at St. John's Church, in Amazonia, Missouri. Shirley will be remembered for her warmth, determination, and love of family. She found joy in bringing people together, whether at home, through her work, or during her many travels. Her kindness, resilience, and adventurous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. | 1272 | C. F. MORGAN DIES, BURIED AT LONG BRANCH After an illness of about a year C. F. Morgan passed to the beyond at the hospital in St. Joseph Friday and the services were held at the Long Branch church Monday with the address by Rev. A. C. Johnson and burial was in the cemetery nearby. Charles Ford Morgan, son of John W. and Sarah Ann Morgan, was born in Scott county, Ky., January 12, 1863. He departed this life December 29, 1922. He moved and settled east of St. Joseph in the year 1881. In the year 1891 he moved to Andrew county, where he has since resided. Mr. Morgan was an active farmer, he and his brother, James, having been partners until 1911. He was the president of the Farmer's Exchange at the time of his death and was an honored, upright, progressive and beloved citizen of the county. March 24, 1887, he was married to Lucy Belle Swink. To them were born five children, four of whom are still living. Ida Elizabeth died at the age of nine months. The living children are John W., James H., Estelle E. and Charles S. Two brothers and two sisters survive, W. M. Morgan of St. Joseph and G. E. Morgan of Savannah, Mrs Lizzie Swink and Mrs. J. C. Glasgow of Savannah. Mr. Morgan was converted at Pleasant View in Buchanan county at the age of 21 and later moved his membership to New Hope church, then when New Hope disbanded, he united with the M. E. Church, South, at Savannah. Of this church he was an honored member at the time of his death. Mr. Morgan was one of the best of neighbors and a friend to all. To his family, no man could have been better. His life will ever remain as an example of good citizenship to everyone who knew him. | 1273 | Charles E. Dye SAVANNAH, Mo. Charles E. Dye, 74, Savannah, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1991, a health-care center in St. Joseph. Born in Sheridan, Mo., Mr. Dye had lived in Savannah since 1949. He had been a resident of the care center since July. He retired as a switchman for the Burlington Railroad. He graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph. Mr. Dye was a member of the Missouri Valley Gem and Mineral Society; Hiawatha, Kan., Gem and Mineral Club; Burlington Veterans Association and Pony Express Beagle Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1982; a son, Duane; and a sister, Anna M. Walker. Surviving: two sons, Victor G. of Crosby, Texas, and Darrell D. of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Margaret A. Charlotte married Douglas Dudley Walker Dec. 27, 1957; he survives of the home. She was a member of Eastern Star Lodge. Charlotte was preceded in death by: her parents, William and Sylvia Black; brother, William L. Black, Jr.; and sister, Patricia Black. | 1275 | Clara J. Wibberg Obituary Mrs. Clara Jane Wibberg, age 90, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, at the Capital Region Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. Clara was born on September 6, 1933, in Chamois, Mo., a daughter of James Edward and Clara Marie (Kempker) Nelson. A lifelong resident of central Missouri, she attended St. Peter Catholic School, Pleasant Ridge Elementary School and later New Bloomfield High School. Clara was married to Calvin J. Reynolds and to this union four of her children were born. She later married William H. "Bill" Wibberg until he preceded her in death. She was blessed with three children from her and Bill's time together. She held various positions throughout her career, working at Oberman's Pants Factory, the International Shoe Company, and the Department of Agriculture as a poultry inspector. Additionally, she served as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Hospital, Charles E. Still Hospital (now Capital Region Medical Center), and eventually retired from Fulton State Hospital in 1998. Alongside her professional roles, she and her husband successfully owned and operated the Port Osage Bar in Osage City, Mo., gaining a reputation for serving exceptional fish plates. Clara's strong work ethic prompted her to continue working even after retirement. She later took on roles as a teacher's aide at South Elementary School, both middle schools, and provided assistance at Cole Country Residential Services before finally retiring at the age of 78. Clara was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, Mo. She also volunteered with 4-H when her children were younger and was the past president of the Osage Community Center. Clara took pride in actively participating in the betterment of Osage City. Clara's life revolved around family, with fish-frys and holiday gatherings being her absolute favorites. She relished monthly meetings with her family Bingo Babes Group and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. Always impeccably dressed, Clara was a classy lady through and through. As a fervent St. Louis Cardinals fan, she passionately followed the team. Her love for excitement took her to the Isle of Capri in Boonville, where she cherished every trip. Clara's vibrant spirit, family-centered values, and zest for life made her loved by all who knew her. | 1280 | CYRUS TULLER COMMITTS SUICIDE Thursday afternoon, February 19, at his home near Avenue City, Cyrus Tuller committed suicide by shooting himself with a shotgun. Mr. Tuller has been ill for some time and had been living at the County Farm but his brother, also a bachelor, wished to have him at the home near Avenue City, and Mr. Tuller was taken there a few weeks ago. Thursday afternoon the brother had gone from the house for supplies and when he returned he found Cyrus dead. Tuller, who was 65 years old, had been in very poor health for some time and could have lived only a few days longer at least. Mr. Dye had been employed in custodial services. Born in St. Joseph on Aug. 7, 1942, he had lived in Savannah, where he graduated from high school. He had lived most of his life in Kansas City, Kan. Mr. Dye was a graduate of the Police Citizen's Patrol Academy in Kansas City, Kan. He was a member of the Rainbow Street Nazarene Church and Hilltop Neighborhood Watch Association, of which he was president, both of Kansas City, Kan. | 1283 | Death of Benj. R. Holt. Another landmark is missed. Mr. Benjamin R. Holt, or better known as Uncle Ben Holt, died of Bright's disease at the residence of his son-in-law, Abel F. Daily, in the Cherry Grove neighborhood, Andrew county, Missouri, at 6 p.m., Thursday, January 26, 1893, aged 79 years, 11 months and 15 days. He had been confined to the house since June last but claimed to be ready at any time to meet the angel of death. There were present at his bedside when the dread summons came his loved children, Mrs. A. F. Daily, Mrs. Louisa Woodcock, Mrs. Judge J. L. Stanton and Mrs. J. F. Young, and Mr. A. F. Daily and Judge Stanton, who did all in their power to make his end as pleasant as possible. He was : a devoted husband, kind father and good neighbor and his excellent traits of character endeared him to those who knew him. He was a friend to the poor and no one ever went to him in want and left without receiving assistance. His former slaves were so attached to him that when they would visit him of late years it was a touching sight to see them shed tears when giving their former old and kind master good-by. He was a charter member of Savannah Lodge No. 71, A. F. and A. M., and was buried by the members of that lodge in the Daily cemetery, on his old homestead, between the remains of his two wives, Friday afternoon, January 27th in the presence of his sorrowing children, relatives, neighbors and many friends. Mr. Benjamin R. Holt was born in Orange county, North Carolina. He emigrated to Clay county, Mo., in 1832 and worked on a farm in that county the first year. After that he was employed at the Indian Agency, Bee Creek, Platte county and at the Agency at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and worked for this agency until the fall of 1839. The following spring he was married in Clay county, Mo., to Miss Sarah E. King, and shortly after moved to Andrew county and preempted the land on which Judge C. M. Daily now lives and owns. He lived on that farm until 1875 excepting one year, '49 and '50 spent in California. His wife died Nov. 15, 1857 leaving him eight children, six of whom are now living, and are, Mrs. Louisa Woodcock, Mrs. Judge J. L. Stanton, Mrs. A. F. Daily, of this county, Mrs. J. F. Young, of Nodaway county, and John M. and B. K. Holt prominent stock dealers of Miles City, Montana. One daughter Mrs. Sophronia Webb died in 1859 and another Mrs. C. M. Daily in 1880. On December 25, 1858, he married as his second wife Mrs. Rebecca Officer, of Clay county, from this union there were no children and this wife died December 17, 1874. Mr. Holt was a member of the first grand jury of this county. | 1284 | Death of Mrs. Anna Forney Mrs. Anna Forney (nee) Hurst, wife of Mr. Philip Forney, living in Nodaway township, Holt county, Mo., was born at Mt. Eaton, Wayne county, Ohio, May 26, 1847, and died Monday, June 12, 1916, aged 69 years and 17 days, death being due to a leakage of the heart. Mrs. Forney came to Holt county in 1851 with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Miser, by whom she was raised, her own mother dying when she was but three weeks old. She was converted when she was 16 years old, at a meeting being held by Rev. Henry Seamiller, Presiding Elder of the United Brethren church, in the old Woods school house, east of Oregon. She has always lived a consistent christian life, and as long as her health permitted she attended regularly the services of the church she loved so well. Her last attendance was on Easter Sunday, this year. She was united in marriage on the 26th of January, 1865, to Mr. Philip Forney, and to this union there has been given three boys and two girls, one boy and one girl dying in infancy, two sons, Wm. And Edward O. Forney, and a daughter, Mrs. Ella Kneale, survive their mother, and all have families of their own and live on farms nearby. Mr. and Mrs. Forney have lived all their married life in the home where she passed away. Her loving companion of all these years, as well as her children, were with her in her last illness and at the moment she passed into life everlasting. Grandma, as she was known to everybody, leaves eleven grandchildren; one brother is still living, Mr. J. F. Hurst, of Angleton, Texas. In addition to these there are a host of friends to morn her passing, as she was known and loved by everybody for miles around. Rev. W. H. Frame, pastor of the U. Patsy was born April 26, 1943, the only child of Earl and Bessie Wandfluh, near Rosendale, Missouri. She was a 1961 graduate of North Andrew High School, where she was an active member of the Alumni Group. Their seven friends still met regularly for dinner and social outings. Mrs. Donahoo spent her career in the grocery business as store manager for Thomas' Market and Green Hills, retiring in 2017. She treasured her time spent with coworkers and made lasting friendships. Patsy enjoyed quilting, crocheting, craft making and traveling to visit her family in many different states over the years. She also looked forward to playing the penny slots at the local casino. Above all Patsy was devoted to her family and time spent with them and her beloved dog, Daisy. She is survived by her son, Tracy Donahoo and wife (Sheila); daughter, Stacy Cantu and husband (Anthony); son, Trevor Donahoo and wife (Tina); son, Troy Donahoo and wife (Shauna), son, Todd Donahoo and wife (Jennifer). Victor was born Aug. 4, 1938, son of Charles and Helen (Barton) Dye. He was a 1956 graduate of Savannah High School. Victor spent many of his working years in the can making industry; working locally for Continental Can. He then moved to St. Louis and Texas, working for several can companies. He eventually relocated back to his homestead and worked as a Plant Manager at Galt Packaging and retired from WRDCC as a Corrections Officer. Vic was a hard worker, rather it be on his farm or in the can plant. He enjoyed much of his retirement years spending time at Big Lake, camping, going out on his pontoon and spoiling his dogs. Victor was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Duane and Darrell Dye; sister, Margaret Hart; sons-in-law, Frank Ortega and Jeff Sampson. | 1299 | Francisco Ortega 1958-2001 EMPORIA, Kan. – Francisco "Frank" Ortega, 43, Emporia, formerly of St. Joseph, died Aug. 30, 2001, at a Topeka, Kan., hospital. Mr. Ortega worked in the department of maintenance and as a bus driver for the Hetlinger Developmental Services, Emporia. Born on April 26, 1958, in Kansas City, Kan., he coached recreational softball and the Special Olympics basketball team. On June 26, 1976, in St. Joseph, he married Vickie Dye. She survives of the home. Mr. Ortega was preceded in death by his mother, Benita. Additional survivors: a son, Scott, Emporia; two daughters, Dana Valentin, Newton, Kan., and Kristen Ortega, of the home; his father Pedro, St. Joseph; seven brothers Tony J., Emporia, Salvador, Olathe, Kan., Jesse, J., Austin, Texas, Gabriel, Pedro "Pete", Juan "Johnny," and Richard, all of St. Joseph; two sisters, Maria Brown, St. Joseph, and Guadalupe Sosa, Silvis, Ill., and two grandchildren. | 1300 | Frank J. Reynolds 1908-1998 SAVANNAH, Mo. Frank J. Reynolds, 90, Savannah, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at his residence. Mr. Reynolds farmed for most of his life. He also worked as a custodian for the Savannah R-III School District for 10 years. Born in Amazonia, Mo., on April 3, 1908, he lived all of his life in Andrew County, Mo., and was a resident of Savannah since 1966. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Amazonia. On April 3, 1935, he married Allene Meers in Troy, Kan. She survives of the home. Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his parents, John Reynolds and Pearl Reynolds Dick; his stepfather, Emil Dick; two brothers, Claude and Dale; a sister, Arelena Kaullen; a half brother, Alva; and a half sister, Ola Dick. Additional survivors: a daughter, Donna R. Reynolds, St. Joseph; a brother, Lee, Rosendale, Mo.; and three sisters, Pearl Harbord and Genevia Perison, both of St. Joseph, and Edna Long, Rogers, Ark.
