Great Great Grandmother Dies: Mrs. Carl Holzhauser had reached age of 94 years.
Few are the individuals who live to be 93 years of age. Mrs. Carl Holtzhauser who died Thursday of last week not only lived to be nearly 94 years but was a grandmother to 17 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Catherine Marie Burmester was born in Hanover, Germany, November 17, 1841, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Pohl, Thursday, Sept. 26. At the time of her death, she was 93 years, 10 months and nine days of age.
On November 10, 1871, she was united in marriage to Carl Holzhauser. To this union were born 7 children, her husband and four of the children preceding her in death. In 1882 the family came to the United States and settled in St. Joseph where they lived until 1888 when they came to Wathena. She has lived in and around Wathena the rest of her life.
She was converted and united with the First Baptist church when she came to Wathena and she remained a faithful member to the end. No one enjoyed the fellowship of Christian friends more than did Mrs. Holtzhauser. She was regular in her attendance at church whenever it was possible for her to be present. For the past few years she has not had the privilege of associating herself with her friends in public worship but she read her Bible and was constant in her remembrance of her church.
Mrs. Holtzhauser was of that sturdy pioneer type of woman; always industrious and cheerful in her habits of life. She knew much of the experiences of pioneer life. She is survived by one son, Chas Holtzhauser of Wathena; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Hanke of Salem, Neb., and Mrs. Amelia Pohl of Wathena; 17 granchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services weer held in the first Baptist church Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. F. E. Carter. Burial was in Belmont cemetery with the Meierhoffer mortuary in charge.
