New Stuff From Monica

Monica Schirmer Eshelman, of Andrew County, Missouri, PACT Project fame, comes through again with photos, obits and tidbits of information for our little project here, as well as stepping up to help with the DeKalb County, Missouri, cemetery project. She doesn’t want credit. Okay, how about just a “Thanks, Monica!”

:-)

Bethel Cemetery, Buchanan County, Missouri

Bethel Cemetery in DeKalb, Buchanan County, Missouri, is up!

We’re on Facebook

We’ve got a page on Facebook. We’re working on a lot of projects, not just this one. So if you’re wondering what’s taking so long, or what’s in the works, take a peek. :-)

A Reminder About Spellings

Please remember to check alternate spellings on these names. The indexes should help with that.

If there are errors in the compilations, please don’t hesitate to let us know. As you know, some of these old death certificates are a bear to read! But if a surname has alternate spellings, and you prefer it spelled a different way, we really can’t just go in and change that. Someone else will come along later and say it needs to be spelled some other way!

So we really need to just record what’s on the death certificate, or on the tombstone. Yes, sometimes it’s a judgment call. There’s just no way to make everyone happy. :-)

It’s up to each researcher what they do with the information from there.

Bellemont Cemetery Updates

Many thanks to Peg Bryson who sent in several obituaries and tombstone photos for her Holzhauser, Pohl and Russell relatives buried at Bellemont Cemetery.

Bandwidth Theft

Well, I was hoping I wouldn’t have to address this, but things being as they are, I guess I was naive.

Do not link directly to the photos on this site. For one thing, it makes you a thief. But for another, it won’t work. The picture may appear for you because your browser has probably cached it. But your visitors will see that embarrassing big red “X” that appears when a graphic is missing, or nothing at all.

You are welcome and encouraged to save the photos and upload, and link to, the copies you’ve uploaded to your own server.

We don’t have any ads here. We don’t have any requests for donations here. We pay for the hosting and the bandwidth, so you aren’t stealing from some “evil” corporation or non-profit project. You’re stealing from people who did you a favor by going out into the cold (or heat) and getting chewed up by bugs to get these photos for you.

Don’t thank us by ripping us off.

Taylor Obituaries

I’ve added several obituaries for the Taylor family buried at the Treanor Cemetery in Butler County, Missouri.

Shiloh Cemetery, Butler County, Missouri

Treanor Cemetery, Butler County, Missouri

All of the markers in the Treanor Cemetery have now been photographed and uploaded. This is a small cemetery, and there were a few unmarked graves and field stones.

“Coming Soon”

Don’t you hate those words? Especially when you see them on a page that hasn’t been updated in five years? We do, too.

But we still needed a way to let you know which cemeteries we’re working on — the ones that have been photographed, but the burials haven’t been entered yet. So we’re not going to use those words. We’re going to use “0 Entries,” instead, on the cemetery index page.

I can’t give you a time frame for when they’ll be up. So I’m not going to say “coming soon.”

“I’m working on it” will have to suffice. :-)

Bellemont Cemetery, Doniphan County, Kansas

All of the photos Kelly has taken so far have been uploaded and entered for Bellemont Cemetery. She’ll be making some more trips — this is a huge cemetery — so there will definitely be updates on this one.

Okay — I Think We’re Rollin’ Now

So, here’s the deal:

We like to hang out in cemeteries and we’ve taken a lot of tombstone photographs. Pretty much all of them have been, or are in the process of being, uploaded to memorials at Find A Grave.

The problem with that is, if you find a picture there that you want to “steal,” you’re supposed to ask for, and receive, permission first. Now, I know pretty much nobody does that — they just take them. But that’s how it’s supposed to work.

Also, I like to mess with stuff and didn’t have enough projects going — so we thought this would be a good one.

So, if you find a photo here that you want, you can snag it. No problem. The only caveat to that is you can’t sell them. If you want to put together a really kewl cemetery book with all these pictures in it, you’re going to have to ask permission and yes, you’re going to have to pay us. It’s a lot of work, and hosting isn’t free, either. But it’s not like that’s happening. ;-)

But if you just want to use these photos on your family tree website or for the report for your family reunion, by all means, have at it.

We aren’t trying to replace Find A Grave — why reinvent the wheel? We’re just doing things a little differently, like having all the burials on one page with the notes so you can compare relationships, etc., without going to each individual page, or paging through the listings 40 at a time. That kind of thing. I’m hoping it will also help you find people when the surnames are constantly spelled differently. You can also save a text file of the transcriptions.

The information here is compiled from the photos we’ve taken, the death certificates we’ve been able to find (isn’t Missouri GREAT?!), obituaries, etc.

Oh — and please don’t take our photos and upload them to Find A Grave! We’ll take care of that, thank you. :-)

Welcome to the Cemetery Project

Actually, it should be called the “Un-Project” because it’s not a project. That’s what we’re telling our husbands, anyway. Kelly and I just like to hang out in cemeteries. And we take our cameras with us.

As you can see, we’re just getting started. You might want to check back in a week or so to see if we’ve gotten this thing figured out. :-)
